Obituaries...

Good to see some action up in here. Johnee, thanks for reposting that e-mail.

Peter Jennings is the big obituary of the week, but there are always remarkable people passing on from this world. Brady and I kicked some e-mail back and forth a couple weeks ago about how there was a spate of soul men who died in July: Luther, Obie Benson of the Four Tops, Eugene Record of the Chi-Lites.

I'm becoming one of those people that find the obituaries among the most interesting parts of the paper. Wasn't it in Fortress of Solitude that Abraham would read Dylan the obituaries over breakfast every morning?

Let me chime off myself again:

I mentioned that Obie Benson of the Four Tops died at the beginning of July, and included a link to the Detroit News obit.

What the DetNews obit failed to mention was the Benson wrote "What's Going On"!

Right after he died, someone posted the news about Benson and an obit on 313, the Detroit (primarily techno) music list I lurk on. Included in that e-mail was this link to an excerpt from this book.

Fascinating--but, in retrospect. not really surprising--that Benson was inspired to write those lyrics after a Four Tops tour stop in SF, with visits to Haight-Ashbury and Berkeley.

As long as we're here, let me repost this link to the article about "What's Going On" in Metro Times' excellent "Detroit Discs That Shook the World" feature from 2002.

What is it about the D...
